Thanks to the folks who spent a weekend or three helping us put up the Community Orchard! We've taken advantage of the good weather and got a whole lot done. A recap:
1) Cedar Trellises - Made possible by Mr. Robert Allen, who put his quality craftmanship into each of the 3 red cedar trellises, complete with bench seating. Along with Edmond and Lana, we finally completed them this past Saturday evening. An amazing job!
2) Native Berry planting - With the amount of digging done by our wonderful volunteers led by current and past students from Windermere Community Secondary under Barry's careful guidance, we planted 15 varieties of native fruit-bearing plants all over the site. Great work everyone!
3) Bike Wheel Pathway Trellis - Utilizing recycled bike wheels from charitable bike shops around the city, Sanjeev, Henry, Chanel, Francisco, and Ken put their hearts (and their backs) into digging in the new trellises. They'll soon be crawling with fruits on the vine.
4) Gravel Pathway - Thanks to Simon and his crew from the City, the site got cleaned up (2 dump-truck loads of garbage), and had the site made more accessible by filling in dips and putting in a gravel pathway. Thanks to Erin MacDonald at the City for making it possible!
5) Landscaping - Andrew and the kind folks at Silverback Treeworks dropped off a complimentary load of bark mulch and cedar logs to help our orchard off to a good start. Thanks to Mike for showing us how it's done and offering some advice for our novice gardeners to get us rolling.
6) Sign - A new chalkboard cedar sign was put up last minute by Sanjeev and Andrew - lookin' good!
7) And Melanie - thanks for the delicious treats you made us for the work parties. I'll get her to post some recipes up soon!
8) Youth Media - Thanks to Derrick, Thomas, and Jaclyn for helping us document the big build day!
