Winter Preparations at the Norquay Community Learning Orchard on Horley Street

Biol, one of newest volunteers

As Fall sets in, we are preparing the Norquay Community Learning Orchard for the winter break.  I've scheduled a few activities: I hope you'll be able to make it for some of them!  We could really use a hand getting all these activities done before the cold sets in.  Bring gloves and a friend!  Please RSVP by e-mail: HSIEH.JSN (at) GMAIL.COM

MONDAY September 17, 4:00PM- 6:00PM - Planting Permacultural Guilds
We will be planting GUILDS - groupings of plants that work together for mutual benefit - around our fruit trees to attract beneficial bugs, repel pests, and improve soil.  Daffodils, clover, garlic, mint borage - planted in the autumn, they will be establish earlier in the Spring.

WEDNESDAY September 19, 4:00PM - 6:00PM - Soil Amending
We will be amending the soil underneath the laurel tree, which currently consists mainly of sandy fill.  We will introduce more organic material (compost, aged manure, wood chips), and plant some winter cover crops and ground cover to keep nutrients in the soil active over the winter.

FRIDAY September 21, 4:00PM - 6:00PM - Sign Posting
We are having new signs designed and printed for the native plants at our site, with all sorts of interesting tidbits.  We will be digging in holes and putting in signposts to hang them on.

WEDNESDAY September 26, 4:00PM - 6:00PM - Preparing Groundcover
We will introduce some effective low-lying plants that will help keep weeds down, protect the soil from erosion, and some that will flower in spring.
**was previously scheduled for Monday, 24th**
