Fall Snapshots I: Renfrew Ravine Harvest Moon Festival

Home grown vegetables submitted to the annual Harvest Competition at the Moon Festival in Slocan Park: buttercup squash, eggplant, chayote, and mo gua (fuzzy gourd).

Fall is busy time at the Food Security Institute. Here are some photos of the Renfrew Ravine Harvest Moon Festival. Pictures of canning workshops, community kitchen, and the Rooftop Garden coming soon.

Volunteers making the Community Harvest Soup at Renfrew Community Centre.

The Community Soup is an annual feature at the Moon Festival. Garden fresh vegetables and herbs are donated by local residents and groceries, from the Rooftop Garden, and from Windermere Secondary's organic garden.

Fresh veggies harvested from the Rooftop Garden: mixed beets, canary chard, and Hungarian wax peppers.

The soup is lovingly prepared by volunteers. Steaming bowlfuls are sold as a fundraiser for Still Moon Arts Society, the organizers of this great community event.

The Harvest Competition at the Moon Festival is an opportunity for neighbours to talk about their gardens, different vegetables, and how to grow and eat them. Here are a few entries into the competition:

Local politicians Don Davies and Adrian Dix were on hand to raise awareness of the "Save Our Schools" campaign and to judge the competition entries.

One of our contest winners. This year many wonderful prizes were donated by Charlie's Chocolates, Gardenworks, Kensington Pottery Club, Museum of Anthropology, Purdy's Chocolate Factory, and Save-On-Foods.

Many thanks to Still Moon Arts Society, Renfrew Park Community Centre, and all the people who organized this wonderful event!
